How Kahoot works
Kahoot! is a game-based learning platform from Norway, launched in 2013. A host shows questions on a big screen and players answer on their phones. Faster right answers get more points, and a leaderboard shows up between questions.
It works because everyone answers at once and the pressure of the clock makes even simple questions fun. Alternatives keep that but add something extra.
Classroom quiz games like Kahoot
- Blooket. Questions are wrapped in game modes like tower defense and gold stealing, with cute characters called Blooks. Kids often ask for it by name.
- Gimkit. Started by a high school student. Players earn in-game money for right answers and spend it on upgrades, so strategy matters.
- Wayground (formerly Quizizz). Renamed in 2025. Students go through questions at their own pace, which helps when some kids read slower.
Trivia games like Kahoot for friends
For a party, the host-and-screen setup still works. Put any quiz game on a TV and let people answer from their own phones, or pass one phone around.
