Games like Crossy Road: tap, hop, don't get flattened

Frogger is the arcade game Crossy Road is built on, and Crossy Road Castle is its co-op follow-up. Pac-Man 256, from the same studio, has the same endless chase. Roam has quick traffic reflex games you can play on iPhone.

How Crossy Road plays

Crossy Road is an endless arcade hopper by Hipster Whale, a studio in Melbourne, released in November 2014. Tap to hop forward, swipe to go sideways. Roads, rivers with logs and train tracks come one after another, and an eagle grabs you if you wait too long.

It is free, and the money comes from collectible characters, from chickens to odd animals, each with its own look. Disney Crossy Road was a licensed spin-off, but it stopped working in 2020.

Hoppers and dodgers to try

Tips for longer runs

Keep a rhythm. Most deaths happen when you stop and then panic. Watch the next lane, not your character. On rivers, ride logs sideways to line up the next jump.

On rail lanes, the warning light flashes before the train, so wait for it to pass. And don't stand still too long: the eagle comes for players who wait.

Roam reflex games

Roam is a free iPhone app with thousands of short games. These two are about traffic and timing.

Make your own hopper with Roam

Describe the hero, the lanes and what tries to stop you. Roam builds it, and you add new lanes or hazards by asking.

Try: "one-tap hopper where my hamster crosses a busy kitchen, roll past the dog, hop the sink, collect sunflower seeds"
