Mario Kart and the kart formula
Mario Kart is Nintendo's kart racing series, started in 1992 with Super Mario Kart. Mario Kart World launched with the Nintendo Switch 2 in June 2025. Item boxes, drifting for boosts, and a blue shell for whoever is in first.
A good kart racer needs three things: drifting that feels good, items that keep the race close, and tracks short enough for a quick rematch.
On PC and consoles
- Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. SEGA's 2025 kart racer. Travel Rings send the pack to a new world mid-race. For PC and consoles, including Switch 2.
- Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. Beenox's 2019 remake of the Crash kart classic, on PS4, Xbox One and Switch only. Many fans think its drifting is the best in the genre.
- Garfield Kart: Furious Racing. Microids' cheap, silly kart racer, good for family nights.
Kart racing tips, Mario Kart style
- Drift every corner. Long drifts charge a boost. Short, safe drifts beat a perfect line with no boost.
- Hold an item behind you. A banana or shell held at your back blocks a hit from behind.
- Do not lead too early. First place draws the strongest attacks. Sitting in second until the last lap is often safer.
- Learn the shortcuts. Most tracks hide a faster line. Some need a mushroom or a boost to clear.
On phones
- Mario Kart Tour. Nintendo's own phone version. It stopped getting new content in 2023, but you can still play it.
- Smash Karts. Online kart battles with weapons, by Tall Team. Short rounds on the web and phones.
- Mob Kart Mayhem (Roam). Blocky karts, item boxes and a four-race cup.
- Kart Rush Online (Roam). Pick a driver. Six karts. Three laps.
- FLIPSIDE: Gravity Rally (Roam). Flip gravity, take the wall, steal first place.
- Wind It, Let Go (Roam). Wind-up toy karts racing between giant ketchup bottles.
