Wild Hearts and Toukiden 2 play most like Monster Hunter on consoles and PC. On phones, Monster Hunter Outlanders and Monster Hunter Now carry the official name. Roam monster-hunt games are at the end.
The Monster Hunter loop
Monster Hunter is Capcom's hunting action series, started in 2004. You track a giant monster, learn its moves, break its parts and carve materials to craft better weapons and armor, then go after something bigger. Fourteen weapon types, from great swords to bows, each play like a different game.
Monster Hunter Wilds came out in February 2025 on PC, PS5 and Xbox. A good alternative needs three things: big monsters with patterns, gear made from what you hunt, and friends to hunt with.
On PC and console
- Wild Hearts. Omega Force and EA's 2023 hunter set in feudal Japan. You build traps and walls mid-fight with Karakuri tools.
- Toukiden 2. Koei Tecmo's demon-hunting game with an open world and a Demon Hand that pulls you onto monsters.
- God Eater 3. Bandai Namco's 2018 anime hunter. Faster, with weapons that eat monsters.
- Dragon's Dogma 2. Capcom's 2024 RPG where you climb onto huge monsters and hang on.
On phones
Dauntless, the free hunter many people remember, shut down in 2025, so these are the phone picks now.
- Monster Hunter Outlanders. TiMi Studio Group's open-world Monster Hunter for iOS and Android, made under license from Capcom. It launched on October 29, 2026, with co-op hunts for up to four players.
- Monster Hunter Now. Capcom and Niantic's 2023 location-based game. Walk outside, find monsters on the map, hunt them in short fights.
- Wear What You Slay (Roam). Voxel survival monster hunting. Hunt the beasts and wear their hides.
- Ride Down Giants (Roam). Mounted boss hunts against giants made of iron.
- Dino Tamer (Roam). A bow, a jungle and six prey to bring in.
