What happened to Rec Room

Rec Room was a social game by Rec Room Inc. in Seattle. It launched in 2016 in VR, then came to PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, iPhone and Android. People met in rooms, played Paintball, Laser Tag and Charades, and built their own rooms with the Maker Pen, Circuits and later Rec Room Studio.

On March 30, 2026, the company said it would close because it could not make the game profitable. New accounts and friend requests stopped that day. The servers went offline on June 1, 2026, Rec Room Studio's online services closed with them, and the game left the App Store and Google Play on June 2.

A lot of Rec Room's best rooms were made by players. If you want a room like the one you lost, or a Rec Room revival of your own, you can describe it on Roam, a free iPhone app. Say the game in a sentence, play it, then change it by talking: "add a paintball arena", "make it four teams". Your friends join from their phones.

Roam is free to download and play, and making games works without a subscription. Optional Spark and Reality plans and credit packs add more creation. Roam is rated 13+ on the App Store, and its terms say you keep ownership of what you make.
