The Vampire Survivors formula

Vampire Survivors is made by poncle. It hit early access in December 2021 and version 1.0 in October 2022. Your weapons fire on their own while you move through endless waves, picking upgrades as you level up. A full run on most stages lasts 30 minutes.

The genre is now called bullet heaven or survivors-like: you are the bullet storm, and the joy is watching your build break the screen. It is also free on phones, with optional ads.

The best survivors-likes

Brotato. A potato with six guns. Short waves, lots of characters, on PC and phones.
Megabonk. Vedinad's 2025 3D take on the genre with jumping, sliding and huge builds. On PC.
Survivor.io. Habby's free phone survivors-like with zombies and chapters.
Halls of Torment. A dark fantasy survivors-like in an old-school style, on PC.
20 Minutes Till Dawn. Survive 20 minutes with a gun and upgrades. You aim yourself, so it plays more like a shooter.
Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor. A survivors-like in Deep Rock Galactic's caves, where you also mine through the walls. On PC.

Tips for your first run

Never stop moving. Enemies walk straight at you. Circle the horde instead of backing into a corner.
Plan an evolution. A weapon at max level, paired with the right passive item, evolves when you open a chest after the 10-minute mark.
Take pickup range. The Attractorb passive pulls gems from farther away, so your level-ups keep coming.

Horde games on Roam

Roam is a free iPhone app with a lot of survivors-likes. A few to start with:

Swarm Survivors. Keep moving. Your guns do the rest.
Hold the Hour. The horde keeps coming. Hold on.
Rotten Rounds. Twelve waves of zombies. One camp. Keep moving.
Kite or Die. Stop and the swarm gets you.
Pop the Slime King. An Archero-style twist: pop the slimes, then pop their king.
More to try. Sink or Swarm goes underwater with auto-firing harpoons, and Rats Fear the Beak puts you in a plague doctor's mask.
